Music Notes

Hi, I am Miss Berry!  I am the Music Specialist at Salk.  I have been teaching Elementary Music for Tulsa Public Schools 19 years and have been a Chair for the Elementary Music Department 4 years.  My goals for every student are:  1) to have a love for music   2) learn to appreciate all styles of music  3) have a general understanding of the history and culture behind the various styles  5) engage each student in a variety of ways to enjoy music......singing, movement, speech, instruments, body percussion, etc.  6) offer various degrees of performance and informance to ignite a passion for the stage  7) to help students grasp the connections between the regular classroom and Fine Arts.

Orff Schulwerk is a process of teaching that was developed by German Composer, Carl Orff.  His idea of teaching children to Speak, Move, Sing and Play has swept the world over and been used in the United States for many years. We have and use instruments developed  by Orff at Salk.   I am a level 2 certified teacher and am constantly attending professional development to better my skills as well as providing professional development to Tulsa Music teachers.  I started a summer professional development for music teachers 12 years ago, called Orff Alive, that implements these ideas.  Our workshops have reached teachers from all over Oklahoma, as well as Arkansas, Kansas and Texas.

I have been involved from the beginning on two special programs offered to our scholars: Any Given Child (Kennedy Center) and Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.  Both of these Arts entities have joined forces to provide our third, fourth (required by AGC), and fifth graders with a super opportunity to be both audience as well as performers with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.  "Link Up" (provided by Carnegie Hall) is a field trip experience like no other! 24,000 students in the Tulsa area will be a part of this program.  The auditoriums are packed to full capacity with the excitement of MUSIC all around.  There is a special program just for parents on the following Sunday afternoon at The Tulsa Performing Arts Center (PAC) downtown.  Dates TBA.

Our district also has an annual  All-District Elementary Music Festival at the Tulsa Community College PACE Van Trease Center (Performing Arts Center for Education) located at HWY 169 and south 81st Street for our 4th -6th grade scholars.  Music is learned throughout the school year, rehearsed at an all-day field trip at TCC with other schools, and performed that same evening for family members.  This festival is in its 11th year and serves a performance number of approximately 300 students from across the district annually.  It is the highlight of year performance for many select students!  Festival tryouts will be held during class and students will be notified in a timely manner.  Parents and selected students will be expected to sign a contract agreement to practice and learn all of the music as well as come to the after school practices and the final performance.    Festival will be held this year on March 22, 2018.
